Job description:
The Director of Clinical Education and Development provides strategic leadership and direction for clinical education and professional development initiatives across the organization. This role partners closely with Learning and Development to design, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve high-impact educational programs that enhance clinical documentation, coding accuracy, and overall healthcare delivery.
Main Responsibilities:
- Lead development and maintenance of education/training programs (including onboarding) for physicians, CDI specialists, coders, and healthcare staff.
- Create and deliver curricula, workshops, and sessions on CDI best practices, coding compliance, medical necessity, and regulations.
- Manage training delivery (in-person, virtual, blended) using innovative instructional design and adult learning principles.
- Perform quality reviews, performance assessments, and monitoring to evaluate program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement in documentation/coding.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (physicians, compliance, HIM/coding, quality) to align education with organizational goals and promote compliant documentation.
- Stay current on industry trends, regulations (e.g., CMS, ICD-10), and evidence-based practices; foster lifelong learning culture.
- Partner with stakeholders to track metrics (query rates, DRG accuracy, documentation scores) and implement interventions for better clinical/financial outcomes.
Essential Functions:
- Design/implement comprehensive clinical education programs.
- Develop/maintain accurate, compliant, relevant content across service lines.
- Deliver training sessions, workshops, and webinars (internal/external).
- Participate in QA programs and monitor education effectiveness/compliance.
- Ensure accuracy/integrity of CDI/coding education.
- Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA/compliance standards.
- Chair educational committees/roundtables (e.g., Physician Workflow, PA Roundtable).
- Align initiatives with Learning & Development and strategic goals.
- Serve as liaison between clinical teams and leadership on educational needs.
- Track updates in coding guidelines/regulations (ICD-10-CM/PCS, DRGs, HCCs, CPT/E&M).
- Introduce innovative methods (e.g., digital platforms).
- Suggest improvements to educational methodologies/productivity.
- Educate clients on documentation accuracy and its impact on coding/quality outcomes.
- Participate in industry events/speaking to promote expertise.
- Provide reports/feedback to clients and stakeholders.
- Help expand new consulting/educational services.
- Provide ongoing support for programs like DRG Assurance and staffing initiatives.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE:
Advanced clinical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent).
Minimum 5 years of clinical experience.
Preferred credentials: CCS, CCDS, CRCR, CDIP, HCQM.
Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
HOME OFFICE REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a quiet and secure space when reviewing protected health information (PHI)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is a full-time position, and general hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position may require long hours and occasional weekend work.
Overall physical workload is light. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Sometimes
work is generally sedentary requiring long periods at work
